Content Subscriptions Guide

Content subscriptions can be applied to a section, in order for users to be alerted when new articles are published in that section.

You can also set the frequency of the alerts (e.g. real-time, daily, etc.).

Create a Content Subscription Channel

First create a channel of type Content Subscription:

Control > Structure > Channels > Channel (Add / Edit)

The reason why you have to create a content subscription channel is for it to be displayed on the My Account page:

Without a Content Subscriptions channel, users will not be able to select the available section nor can they toggle with the Frequency Options.

Set up the Content Subscription Profile

Control > Settings > Content Subscription Profiles

You will need to set up a Content Subscription Profile which is then applied to a Channel(s).

This will allow for the underlying Sections within the selected Channel/s to appear on the Content Subscriptions and RSS Feeds screen.

Key Fields:

  • Name: the Name that this Profile will be called
  • Title: the Title to appear on the Subscription email
  • Channel: select the channel(s) which will use this Content Subscription Profile
  • Email Profile: set the Email Profile (Name and Sender Address) for the messages
  • Default Frequency: the default frequency option for the content subscription
    • Real-Time
    • Daily
    • Weekly
    • Monthly
  • Thumbnail Alignment: the alignment you want for the Thumbnail
    • Left
    • Right
    • Top
  • Design Style: the Design Style that you wish to apply to the email

As mentioned, you will need to apply the newly created Content Subscription Profile to a Channel(s), this is so the articles from the underlying section(s) are enabled for the Send Via Content / Interest Subscription function.

Example:

I have set up a content subscription profile that targets the Android News channel:

The Content Subscription Profile will appear on the selected channel(s):

The section below that channel is Android News.

Now, that section will appear as an option on the Content Subscriptions and RSS Feeds page:

Note: if a channel does not have an associated content subscriptions profile, then the articles within the underlying section will not have the Send Via Content / Interest Subscription option on the article Add/Edit screen.

This is an article that doesn't have its channel set with a content subscription profile:

This is an article whose channel has an associated content subscription profile:

As you can see, the content subscription profile has the Send Via Content / Interest Subscription option enabled for the article.

Setup the Content Subscription Notification Email

The Content Subscription Profile has several settings that will alter how the notification email is displayed.

These are:

  • Title: the Title that appears on the Subscription email
  • Email Profile: the Name and Sender email address
  • Introduction: the Intro text that appears on the Subscription email
  • Detail Listing Title: Enter a title to be added in the Content Subscription email before the detailed listings
  • Disclaimer: the disclaimer that appears on the Subscription email
  • Manage Content Subscription Label: the text used on the footer of the email alert, this is a link to the users Content Subscription Channel where their content subscriptions are managed.
  • View More Link Label: Set a customised text for the View More link
  • Number Entries: Select to display items listed with numbering
  • Display Regional Information: Select to display Country and Region information relating to an item
  • Display Member Name: select this if you want to display the name of the author of the article
  • Display Member Link: select this to have the author (Member Name) set as a link to their public profile

Articles

When you create an article and are ready to publish, please remember to tick the  Send Via Content / Interest Subscription option if you want the article to be included in the content subscription alerts.

The following conditions need to be met for the article to be sent via Content Subscriptions:

  • The article should be made live (Live checkbox ticked)
  • The Send Via Content / Interest Subscription option should be enabled
  • The Private option should be disabled:

The Content Subscriptions and RSS Feeds channel

On this page, users can freely sign up for content notifications, related to all of the sections that were enabled by means of a Content Subscription Profile.

Users can choose the desired frequency (Real-Time, Daily, Weekly, Monthly).
