Overview

Setting up Article Attributes allow site administrators to add additional topics for editors to tag their articles before publishing. This is also used for content filtering and navigation. We have also evolved this functionality so editors not only can tag their articles with Topics but also with Accounts and Contacts from your CRM and Dates. This is useful for tagging Reviews articles.

In order to set them up correctly, you need a combination of Topics, Article Profile and Article Attributes working together.

Define Topics

Before we start setting up the Article Attributes, you need to define which topics you would like your publisher to use. This involves setting them up in the Topic list with the right hierarchy, for example, creating a parent topic, which is what you are going to select on the Article Attributes, then create the child topics, which are the topics that your editors will select to tag the articles. I.e. parent topic = Colour. Child topics = Yellow, Blue, Red.

By using the example above, this means editors can select, Yellow, Blue or Red topics. On the Article Attributes, you can set a rule whether editors can only select one or more and if it is required. We will cover this in the next step.

If you need more information on how to set up topic lists, please read our Topics and Topic Manager Reference Guide: www.affino.com/affinohelp/publish-guides/topics-and-topic-manager-reference-guide

Set up Article Attributes

Once you have defined your topics, you need to create an Article Attribute for each parent topic. Here’s how to create them:

Control > Publish > Article Attributes

  • Name - Enter the Name you wish to call this attribute.
  • Description - Add a description that outlines the information relating to the Article Attribute.
  • Type - Select the selector type you'd like for this Attribute. Here you have the following options:
    • Account - this is useful for editors to tag an existing Account from your CRM with the article. You will tend to use this when writing a review. I.e. Venue
    • Account Type - same principle as the Account, but limiting your editors to only tag Accounts which has the selected Account Type.
    • Contact - This is useful for editors to tag an existing Contact from your CRM with the article. You will tend to use this when writing a review. I.e. Actor. You also have the option to show the Job Title by checking the checkbox Show Job Title
    • Date - you can relate a date to the article. This is useful if you are writing a review for an event. I.e. Launch Date or Press Date
    • Dropdown - Display the topics in a dropdown format. This is useful if you would like your editors to select only one topic.
    • Radio - Display the topics in a radio format. This is useful if you would like your editors to select only one topic as well.
    • Text - allow editors to tag the articles with a free text
    • Tick box - Display the topics in a Tick box format. This is useful if you would like your editors to select more than one topic.
  • Parent Topic - Select the Parent Topic to define the attribute list for this Article Attribute. This list is then presented alphabetically in the selector. Remember this is only valid if you have selected Dropdown, Radio or Tickbox as a type.
  • Attribute Display - Select Attribute Display for this Article Attribute.
    • Display as tag and production - This means the topics will be shown as tags on the display side and on the production area (only available with the Review template)
    • Hidden - Select this option if you only wish to use this article attributes for internal use only (it won’t appear on the display side)
    • Display as tag only - This means the topics will be shown as tags on the display side
    • Display as production only - this means the topics will appear on the production area (only available with the Review template)
  • [ ] Show Filter - Select to show this Article Attribute as a Filter in the Scoped Search
  • Priority - Give the Attribute a Sort Order - this is similar to Sort Order, but multiple attributes can have the same priority.
  • Article Profile - Select the Article Profiles which use this Attribute. This will also determine which Channels this Attribute will be applicable to. This is not required. You can add the Article Attributes while creating the Article Profile.
  • [ ] Required - Select to make the Attribute mandatory for Article submissions.

Create an Article Profile and assign Article Attributes to it

When you have set up your Article Attributes, next you need to set the rules where would you like these attributes to be available for you editors to select. Here you can set rules on whether to display those attributes to specific Presentation Styles and Channels.

Here are some of the key fields, with help text, that you will need to configure the Article Profile and assign the Article Attributes:

  • Name - Enter the Name for the Article
  • Article Attributes - Select the Article Attributes which apply to this Article Profile
  • Channel - Select the channels which use this Article Profile, Only Standard Channels can be selected
  • Presentation Style - Select the Presentation Styles (Standard Templates) that this Article Profile applies to. Note that you have to select the relevant Presentation Styles to be able to see the options when editing the articles.

Start tagging articles

Once you have done the steps above, the next time you start adding or editing an article, based on the configuration done above, then you will see your Article Attributes under the Options panel, just like the screenshot which sits on the top of this guide.
