Of the 243 million operations performed annually, just 3.5% of them happen in the world’s poorest countries and a far smaller percentage are performed on children. Congenital anomalies go unrepaired, treatable injuries result in lifelong disabilities, and children die of easily correctable surgical problems such as incarcerated hernias.
For our charity partner Humanity Direct all and any overheads are privately funded - meaning that 100% of your donation goes to directly fund a patient’s care - from the actual surgery to medical supplies used. and post-operation care. Humanity Direct has helped over 2500 children with vital operations - including cataract surgery, skin grafts, neurosurgery and hernia surgery. The current campaign is focused on Uganda.
Humanity Direct runs a number of different initiatives and fund-raisers - and you can either fund individual operations listed on the site, or pay direct into the Universal Fund.
As a leading example, Humanity Direct's 'Glasses for Classes' programme has provided 3000 children with eye tests and over 1000 children with the poorest eye-sight have been given a pair of glasses. Not only do these children now have a healthy future ahead of them but they've also been able to return to school and their parents have avoided getting into debt and poverty.
This Christmas, Humanity Direct needs our help to fund even more vital surgeries for children. Covid has meant that surgery at the majority of hospitals has been suspended, while since some restrictions have been lifted, Humanity Direct has been working hard to get children the surgery they need and there is now a long list of operations that need funding.
The current Fundraising 'Virtual Fun-Run' sees participants trying to accumulatively run the 18,100 Mile distance that separates the North Pole from the South Pole. The target is to try to raise £20,000 over that distance. Running event partners are XNRG and UltraBritain - as is usual. That Event is well on its way, and as of writing 7,457.5 km has been covered - meaning we're approximately at the border Syria on the map. (as below).
If you're interested in participating in that event - you can still sign up at UltraBritain.com.
The main thing here of course is to Save as many Children's Lives as possible - through Direct Contributions to those vital surgeries and operations.
If you have a little to spare at Christmas - please spare a thought for those vulnerable Children and Donate towards their surgeries and operations - or contribute to the Universal Fund,
