At the end of every year I run through the highlights of the preceding 12 months, and no matter how much I experience I never catch everything, and not necessarily in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate it. I have been composing this list pretty much since the start of this month, and every day I make some minor tweaks. The top few entries are relatively safe, but there is a lot of movement lower down, as something catches my fancy and forces me to elevate it. As far as music goes, it was always going to take a lot to shake St Vincent from the top of the tree this year, same goes for Star-Wars-level-brilliant Guardians of the Galaxy - the perfect marriage of Sci-fi with humour and 70’s soundtrack. I certainly watched a lot of films and television this year and reacquainted myself with the wonderful world of Anime, mostly courtesy of Crunchyroll...
Best Albums
Glastonbury 2014 really switched me on to St Vincent, who’s eponymous album justifiably takes the top seat. I really liked FKA Twigs LP1 too, but expected it to be even better than it turned out. The top 10 features a lot of ’Scanditronica’, while Angel Haze’s debut was my favourite hip-hop long player, ahead of most others’ favourite ’Run the Jewels 2’. Hardly any rock in this year’s chart, which is dominated by electronic music.

Best Tracks
Excellent year for singles, really love Soak and believe she has an enormous future, even though I don’t usually go for the singer/songwriter type. Sia’s Chandelier was everywhere this year (love the choreography), as was St Vincent and Kiesza’s Hideaway, which pips ’Rather Be’ for my favourite dance track of the year, and Ten Walls ’Walking with Elephants’ deservers a mention for most memorable proper club track.

Best TV
Great new modern family on Amazon’s new series Transparent - like a cross between Royal Tenenbaums and Woody Allen - superb dialogue. Best realised season yet of GOT, Peaky Blinders showing UK can still do global HBO quality shows. Much to love from various directions and genres, a number of seasons ended weekly which marred my enjoyment - e.g. In the Line of Duty. Lots of Anime for me this year, extended my own collection, plus plenty of viewing on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
- Transparent
- Game of Thrones S4
- Peaky Blinders S2
- Fargo
- Orange is the New Black S2
- The Good Wife S5/6
- Akame ga Kill S2

- True Detective
- Hell on Wheels S4

Best Films
For sheer enjoyment factor, nothing can beat Guardians of the Galaxy or Grand Budapest Hotel - different audiences for sure, The first a worthy successor to Star Wars, for my nephews’ generation. Some asinine critics branded Wes Anderson’s latest as distinctly humourless where I found it utterly delightful and likely Wes’s best to date. Nigthcrawler was also an extraordinarily surprising film with Jake Gyllenhall pulling off a scary career best too.
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Grand Budapest Hotel
- Nightcrawler
- Gone Girl
- Boyhood
- Maleficent
- Edge of Tomorrow / Live Die Repeat
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
- Raid 2
- Interstellar
