Key Affino Insights 2024 Generated via AIs

News audiences see significant growth in numbers but are increasingly just focused on reading one or two articles.

Affino's first Intelligence Briefing where all the data, charts and insights where prepared via AI.

The stats show that news audiences are far more ready to log in to read news than ever before.

The story of this year’s Affino Insight Briefing is as significant as the findings themselves. For the first time we used AI to do all the data processing and transformation, as well as create the charts, infographics and generate the insights which were then the basis of the presentation.

In 2025 the goal will be for Affino’s AI Analyst to automate the whole process and produce all the elements for the Insight Briefing.

Overall the process of using AI’s was a learning journey for us, however the feedback from Data Legends who’s CEO was present on the day advised me that for data professionals the data processing and insight creation is now very stable through ChatGPT, but that the charts and infographics much less so.

We did find that getting consistency in results from the prompts is the overall biggest challenge with AI’s and that in practice you often have to run a second prompt, repeating elements of the first for the AI to deliver fully.

I have related the presentation deck and the event video of the Insight Briefing so you can have the full insight at hand.

Some of the key highlights are:

Logins

The number of logins, especially on news sites, have seen a massive upswing in the second half of 2023, way beyond being merely a seasonal gain.

This is down to two key factors:

  1. Many more news sites running on Affino now require users to log in to read the full articles. This is because otherwise the content is completely exposed to be scraped by all AI agents, and news site content in particular is heavily scraped. Nothing protects content better than requiring a login.
  2. Users are now simply much more comfortable with registering, and logging in to read news content.

The big upside of this is that media companies now have access to much more current and relevant audience data than ever before, which is a boon for media, data and lead generation services.

It is also great for segmenting and delivering the best content and experiences to the different segments of the overall audience.

Average Session Duration

Whilst there are on average many more sessions than before, these continue the year on year shortening we have seen for some time now. Users tend to be more focused on reading just one or two articles at a time and then moving on.

It will be essential to regain the initiative here and aim to have deeper and more meaningful relationships with the audience, something which we believe will be transformed with the advent of the evolved interactive web interfaces we will be launching over the coming months, starting with Gen 4 Affino AI coming soon.
