As of January 12th (today!), Microsoft will stop technical support and security updates for older versions of its Internet Explorer browser. It is in effect issuing a decree that all who wish to continue using IE need to be running the latest 11th generation version of the browser.

Affino has always technically supported the 2 latest versions of the 4 key browser platforms - Chrome, Firefox, IE and Safari, so Microsoft has really done us a favour by instituting this new policy. Older versions of browsers are always less secure, and don’t support the very latest feature sets of JavaScript, CSS or HTML5. We have often had our work cut out coming up with creative workarounds to get things to function in the older browsers, so Microsoft is really doing us a favour here.

Of course there will still be numerous public institutions around the land which will remain out of step with this requirement for some time yet.

We have always though that browser manufacturers should take a leaf out of Chrome’s book - where the browser auto-updates to the latest release. We’ve never understood why some organisations are 2 or more generations behind on their browser usage - it’s a very dangerous policy, but fortunately one we no longer need be concerned about on this account ...
