Likely Best Picture Oscar Contenders for 2024
As usual - I didn’t get around to seeing all I wanted to in 2023 - and I still have some films to catch up on. Saltburn would definitely have been in the list had I watched it in time - and no doubt there are a few more that I overlooked.
No film I watched in 2023 was wholly flawless - and nothing came close to say Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. I’m hoping his Mickey 17 is going to be one of the stand-out’s for this year. I enjoyed a whole load of films - but all were flawed to degrees, and some were a little bit disappointing. And while several did not come up to expectations - there was enough within them to hold my interest.
There was nothing quite as wild or as creative as Everything Everywhere All At Once - so finger’s crossed that we get something spectacular this year!
Several of the Oscar contenders don’t particularly interest me - so unlike typical years where I try to catch up on all the key Oscar contenders - this year I’m mostly going to stick with what appeals to me. And I will then try and catch up on anything I overlooked at year end - as per this year.
I’ve named 19 key Oscar Contenders - while my gut tells me it’s going to Oppenheimer’s year - and there are 10 finalists which are a little more critically acclaimed than the chasing pack.
There are 20 films in my Most Anticipated listing - with my sort of 16 favourites in the grid - I’m hoping that there are going to be some vintage films there that stand repeat viewings.
