 The Marketing and SEO Update

Affino 8.0.35 is a big leap forward for SEO and Marketing, with dozens of high impact updates for engaging with the bot economy

Affino delivers the full access management suite from metering and paywalls, to Magic Links and Handoff APIs

Marketers delight at the latest tech from Affino

The first step of the audience engagement funnel is often the most important one. When it comes to websites that often comes down to SEO, and how well your site works with the marketing and bot ecosystem, and increasingly how it works with AI’s.

This update focuses a great deal on improving how Affino and your digital presence works with the global bot ecosystem. Affino pages are now served more intelligently to bots, with improved meta data and sitemaps, and they can inform bots which pages are updated or not since they were last checked.

Affino now gives you control over what bots you do and don’t let interact with your sites. This is crucial as over 95% of the site traffic, often 99% of the traffic, is bots. They can both be beneficial, e.g. Google Search indexing your site(s), or detrimental if for example scraping your site to put the content into a competing AI.

We are introducing Topic URLs into Affino for the first time. Topic Filtered pages now have Screen Names and are indexed independently by Google, Bing et al. This means for example if you had a Fish News page, previously all filtered versions would simply have had the same URL and page rank. Now each filtered view, e.g. News/Cod and News/Plaice will have its own Canonical URL and page rank with far more targeted content. This will significantly evolve how search engines index and rank your pages and should lead to improved targeted rankings for all single topic filtered pages.

The new Bot Access management and updated Bot Access Logs, give you control over what bots you do and don’t give access to your site(s). You can see which ones are well or badly behaved. The introduction of ’If Modified Since’ means that Affino now informs bots if they have already indexed the current version of a page, we are hopeful that this should lead to less peaky site loads as bots no longer try to scrape old content.

We are introducing two major new feature enhancements to Affino for site access and authentication. The first is Magic Links. Users can now be sent links and simply click to log in to the site, with limited access rights set on the Magic Link. This is great for running events, whereby you can provide fast access to to secured live streams and content. It is also great for marketing promotions with limited time access.

The second authentication enhancement is the new Handoff API. This means that users logging into Affino can now be seamlessly logged into 3rd party sites using a combination of Affino’s User API, CRM API and the new Handoff extension.

When you look at the full breadth of Affino’s authentication and access control, it is now one of the most feature-complete solutions of any available on the market today, supporting as it does: Logins, Metering, Auto-assignment from email domains and IP Addresses, Subscription fulfilment, two-factor authentication, 3rd party login authentication, and now Magic Links and seamless handoffs.

This release sees a greatly enhanced Broken Links Analysis report so that you can focus on specific timeframes for broken links as well as filter by a number of links threshold, meaning you can quickly focus on the important links.

Article Link Tracking has been rewritten from the ground up and now supports internal and external links and provides a breakdown of each individual who clicked on them (and can now be added to contact lists).

Two other areas which see major improvements are Public Profiles and Awards. Public Profiles see the introduction of a new Advanced high impact profile template. You have the choice of upgrading the whole directory or selectively promoting individuals to the premium profiles.

Awards see a transformation in usability, messaging and management, with dozens of improvements throughout. We have added information packs, improved the impact of the messaging, transformed the management with many new shortcuts throughout. Entries can now be archived or deleted, can contain pre-defined drop-down options, have word counts enabled / disabled, and in general all aspects of the awards have been refined.

Behind the scenes, we have introduced an AI architecture to Affino following an extensive R&D focus since late last year. Initially we have launched a set of Specification and Support AI Bots, along with a new Demo Bots which we will be training and refining in-house.

We are open to explore any Affino-based AI project at this point, and have architected a new set of core Affino based AI services for launch in the second half of 2023.

Other areas which see nice enhancements in this Affino update include Sales Targets, the Analysis Dashboard with added login metrics, Events, Forums, and the Message Template Builder. In all there are over 270 updates in this release.

Key Enhancements

Topics URLs (beta)

Currently a single topic filtered news page shares the same SEO, Page Rank and indexing with an unfiltered page view. This can be quite a disconnect and does not give the best SEO performance. We are updating Affino so that when a page is filtered by a single topic it will be generated as its own canonical page, which will be indexed separately by Google, and has its own analytics.

In practice Affino now generates a new distinct Canonical URL for the filtered page in the format: site.com/channel/topic (or /channel/section/topic). This is then indexed distinctly by Google and will have its own Page Rank.

We are introducing Topic Screen Names, URLs, and new analysis screens for these enhanced topic pages. These are significant enhancements that will have a big impact on SEO as each screen which is being filtered by a single Topic will have their URL recognised by Google, and with its own Canonical Link. Note that when using the scoped search, or when filtering with more than one topic, Affino reverts back to the ?topic= approach as Google does not optimise for multiple topics in the URL.

Note that a significant number of templates and design elements have been updated to support the new Topics URLs. Note also that this change will mean that page stats will decline for the unfiltered page views on channels and section, instead these stats will now feature on the new filtered Topic pages.

Bot Access Management

Until now, Affino has tightly managed the bot blocking and white listing for all Affino sites. This has allowed us to optimised the uptime, security and performance across all sites. Times are changing though, and it is clear that with the advent of AI’s and more powerful online services we need to open this up to each Affino instance manager.

Site owners on a dedicated Affino hosting service (both application and data) will be able to go into the Bot Access Management to give access (whitelist) and block any bot using their identifiers / IP addresses. Those on shared setups will only be able to block.

Affino currently blocks all the major SEO services automatically (e.g. Moz, Semrush), as they are overly aggressive at scraping websites, and they typically ignore the rules set up in the robots.txt (to which all bots are supposed to adhere), often by a factor of 100 to 1,000. It is now possible to whitelist these services, however be aware that bad bots readily overwhelm your sites, and you may see downtime, or need to ramp up your site(s) to a higher tier. This is because Affino will no longer block these services automatically if they are whitelisted, even when they are overwhelming your sites.

Equally if you identify bots (AI’s or otherwise) which are accessing your sites in high volumes and you wish to block them, then that is now also possible. Bot access overall is managed through the Bot Access Profile which can be unique for each site (brand).

We have renamed the Bot Blocking Logs to Bot Access Logs and greatly enhanced the data provided, and how you can filter the logs to identify bad actors, i.e. bots which are overly heavily accessing your site, as well as for you to identify when whitelisting is being applied. We have introduced a new List View option so you can either show all white listings / blocks or they can be aggregated. It is also possible to enter a minimum threshold. These combined mean you can quickly identify those bots placing the highest load on your site(s).

If Modified Since

To mitigate the fact that site owners may be opening their sites up to a host of new bots and for general SEO performance, Affino now supports ‘If Modified Since’. Some Bots, e.g. Google Search bot, send through a check request to only get recently updated content from Affino, i.e. only if it’s been modified since date time x. Affino now supports this elegantly on Article pages, so that when bots use this check, only updated pages are sent through and if there is no data on the page then Affino will simply inform the bots. This should also improve the overall performance of your Affino site(s).

Magic Links (beta)

Recently we introduced, and have steadily improved, Affino’s Two Factor Authentication for tighter security and management access. This release sees the introduction of Magic Links for simple, fast temporary access to Affino.

Magic Links open up a host of new opportunities with Affino as it is possible to send temporary access URLs to both individuals and organisations, up to 1,000’s of individuals at a time. This means that by simply clicking on a link and confirmation button, each user is identified and gains access to your content - based on the security group assigned to that Magic Link.

The primary use cases for Magic Links are events and promotions, in particular live events, where users no longer need to log in to see secured content quickly, and have access to the video and chat feed, as well as other event-specific content. This is particularly effective during live events where users can simply click in and confirm, or if their email has expired they are then automatically sent a fresh email to click and confirm on.

Setting up new Magic Links is simple, and we provide a test facility with insightful analytics so you understand exactly how each Magic Link has been used, how frequently, and by whom. This also assists considerably with support as you can see if anyone is having challenges with accessing, and equally if a link is being overshared. Each magic link send is audited, both test and final send. When the actual Magic Link is sent all the test links are removed to ensure all the stats are accurate. Test links are limited to a maximum of twenty recipients and an alert is displayed if this is exceeded.

There are two types of magic links, one intended for individuals, where each user receives a unique magic link and corporate where a single magic link can be shared across a specified number of sessions for more larger group assignments

When users come into the site on a Magic Link, they only have access to the security rights provided by the Magic Link, e.g. if they are a full member with VIP access, and those access rights are not available through the Magic Link, and they will not have those rights for the duration of the session. We have also restricted it so that no Control Centre securities can be assigned through Magic Links.

If the user’s magic link has expired, but is within the live period for the magic link, then Affino will automatically send a fresh link. You define both the overall Live period and how long each magic link is active, i.e. can be from minutes up to days. Having shorter timeframes means improved security.

With the addition of Magic Links and the Handoff API, Affino now provides a very extensive authentication platform where users can log in with very tightly monitored Two Factor Authentication, through to instant Magic Links, and can be seamlessly connected through to secured 3rd party platforms.

Sitemap (Google / Bing et al)

This release sees Affino introducing a new generation of sitemaps for search engines and bots to consume. We have greatly refined how sitemaps are generated, as well as the formats they are produced in. Whilst the previous generation is still fully supported by Google, the new generation is far more efficient and contemporary. Instead of creating one unified sitemap Affino generates unique ones for articles, editions, accounts, contacts, media and forums. This makes for easier review and more reliable sitemap generation.

Broken Links (Analysis)

We have enhanced the Broken Links analysis to improve its utility considerably. We have added a new Last Break Date(s) filter, this ensures that only recent broken links can be included in the analysis. We have added a Number of Instances filter so that it is possible to filter by the highest impacting broken links first, and then expand the range to include all the broken links.

Article Link Tracking

It is now possible to set up trackers for both internal and external inks. Previously it was only possible to set up external link trackers. We have completely rewritten the tracking engine to support both. Additionally Affino now captures each individual who clicks on a tracked link, so as well as the overall tracking stats you can target each individual who clicks. This is very useful for tracking paid and in-house marketing campaigns.

Advanced Public Profiles / Contact Page Analysis (beta)

This release sees the introduction of new high impact, premium, Advanced Public Profiles. This is a great enhancement for Top 10 / 50 / 100 people listings. All contacts can now feature additional details for Areas of Specialism, Education, Innovations and Publications (and these can be renamed / repurposed).

These are visually a clear step up from regular public profiles and are intended to be sold as a premium service. Equally you can shift all your public profiles across to the new format for an overall higher impact display of featured individuals. When a user clicks through from a Contact Listing, Affino now shows the specific listing and position they are on near the top of their profile.

On the Contact Listing (Contact List DE) it is now possible to display the position of the contact in the listing and to choose where on the avatar the ranking overlay is shown.

Significantly we are introducing analytics on Public Profile Pages, so that each contact now has dedicated analytics, and a ranked listing in the overall Site Analysis. Previously these stats were only available in aggregate on the overall Channel level. Affino will be tracking Impressions, Recent Viewers and Referring URLs for each public profile.

Awards Enhancements

This release sees a number of usability enhancements across awards management, for simpler and more intuitive creation and administration of awards programmes. There are also a number of end user usability enhancements to smooth the customer journey.

These include:

    • We are adding downloadable Information Packs to each awards category. These can be accessed upfront directly from the awards category listing.
    • Category Entry Notifications mean that entrants can automatically be sent a notification of their entry when it is created and saved.
    • Awards notifications can now feature a header images (this is shared across all awards notifications)
    • We have made it possible to switch off nominations, meaning that it is possible to enforce that users can only enter awards on their own behalf and not by nominating someone else.
    • We have added drop-down field options to each criteria, meaning that users will be able to select from a set of options as well as key in data when entering their category information.
    • It is now possible to archive or delete awards entries, with guardrails in place to prevent the deletion of paid for entries.
    • We have updated the display side management so that it is now possible to directly access and manage the awards profile, categories and criteria via the App Bar.
    • In general it is now much easier to navigate through the awards management.
    • When managing the awards there are now a number of enhanced prompts and error notices for further clarity.
    • It is now optional to display the word count on awards criterion, along with the maximum number of permitted words
    • Awards Categories can now be made Active / Inactive.
    • The Awards Stage is now clearly signposted and highlighted
    • We have restored the Max Word Count setting for Award entries.
    • Improved user journey with automated redirect back to the award entry channel on login and registration.

Handoff API (beta) / User API / CRM API

The Handoff API is a breakthrough for Affino Single Sign-on Integration (SSO). Using a combination of Affino’s User API, CRM API and Handoff API it is possible to run unified logins through Affino for a host of 3rd party services, with simple integrations. This offers up a host of opportunities for using Affino to manage the users, sell the subscriptions and provide the reporting, as well as a single customer view for the audience for your in-house and 3rd party services.

To-date Affino’s User API has been used to provide email / password login services for a host of 3rd party apps, custom apps and ebooks. With the introduction of the Handoff API users can log in on Affino and seamlessly be passed back to the 3rd party app with the login and authentication happening seamlessly for the user.

Alongside the new Handoff API, which is essentially an extension of the User API, we have also made core API updates to the CRM API, including the ability to set the primary account contact. The handoff API is well documented for effective developer deployment.

To facilitate the Handoff process we have also updated the Button DE and Text DE to support the Handoff URL as an option for linking in and auto-authenticating to the 3rd party sites.

Sales Targets

Sales Targets were introduced to Affino quite some time ago but have only truly been adopted by the Affino community much more recently. This release sees major improvements to every aspect of of the Sales Targets interface, and means that they are now fully current with Affino’s updated ecommerce engine.

We have renamed, updated the data service, and added new Sales and Sales % columns to the dashboard. Equally every series has been updated to support all the new payment and order statuses which have been introduced to Affino in recent years.

Upgrade Guidance

If you have a Staging site, we recommend updating to this release and testing thoroughly prior to updating your main Affino instance. Note that all active scheduled tasks are wiped when you update the site so make sure that any required ones are completed prior to running the update.

It is important to liaise with the support team to schedule in an update window where they can be on hand to support with the update. It is essential that you run through the complete update process starting with the Affino Updater, followed by the sequence of the system and design updates laid out on the Control > Update screen.

The  Beta elements in this release are: panels, multi factor authentication, bot blocking, and the analysis dashboard segments, Magic Links and the Handoff API. To see the current list of Beta elements you can also navigate to them on the Support Menu.

Other Enhancements

Account - Affino no longer displays subscriptions and orders on accounts where the user has left the account (company). Note this is just for orders placed after they left the account.

Ad Campaigns - new Date Range filter

Analysis Dashboard - Affino’s analysis dashboard uses multiple different date ranges to deliver each of the indicators and insight data tables. This release provides greatly enhanced insight on how each element is calculated and the range of data included. We have also further refined the language used to minimise the possibility for the mis-interpretation of the data. We have also added Logins to the Analysis dashboard. It is a key stat and is available both in the main graph and as a key stat so you can see the login trends, including segmented ones for each of your sites.

Article Listing DE - new Item Border Radios option to take the radius from the Design Style

Attendees - improved guidance when adding attendees to contact lists, in particular highlighting when not all attendees are yet created as contacts in the Audience CRM

Bookmarks - previously the Bookmark icon was only shown to guest users on the listings, this was something of an anomaly. We have added the option for Show Bookmark Icon to Guests on the Channel settings. When selected, Guests will see the bookmark icons consistently throughout and are taken to the login / registration workflow when they click on a bookmark.

Bounced Emails - when emails bounce, Affino automatically suspends sending email to the affected email addresses. Frequently emails fail when corporate email systems go down or block emails en-mass. To counter such unintended send blocking, Affino will now reinstate email sending to email addresses when they log in with the respective email.

Captions - new ‘Use Alt Text for Caption’ option. This option is useful for when not enough care has been taken to ensure the alt text is relevant.

Clipboard - new Clipboard Profile for the upcoming Affino clipboard functionality, which (in a future release) will let you 1 click copy the article text from both the article listing and detail into a clipboard to be pasted into a 3rd party app, e.g. for production workflows. The Clipboard Profile defines what article fields are automatically included.

Contact Lists - the topic-based contact list assignment is now Zone enabled. Previously if you had multiple zones with overlapping taxonomies then users might be assigned to a contact list created for a separate zone.

Contacts (listing) - refined defaults on contact listing: Affino now automatically lists out the Full and Non-member Contact Types, simply update the Contact Type filter settings to also include pure mailing list subscribers.

Contact Listing DE - now supports the ability to only display a ranking on the first x members of a list, e.g. if there are 100 contacts in the list, Affino can display the top 30 ranked, and the remaining 70 unranked. This is carried through to the Profile views where ranked players are shown as ranked when clicked through to and others not. This even works when you are searching and filtering the contacts in the listing.

Control Centre - ongoing updates to the latest generation Affino framework.

Conversion Events - as the Affino user community is becoming more sophisticated, conversion event triggers are being used to deliver more advanced automations. This release sees a number of important updates that smooth these automations and further improve conversion event automation on multi-zone setups. New Magic Link used trigger.

Coupons Report - renamed from Promotions Report

Customer Ladder - the User Profile is now required to be set on each Customer Ladder Profile (previously this was not a required setting).

Design Elements - we have added a new Ignore Duplicate Exclusion  option on to a number of Design Elements. This is because some DE’s might be hidden at certain breakpoints and therefore some key articles are not displayed, in particular ones which only show at mobile breakpoints. The DE’s which support this new option are: Article Carousel, Contact / Account Related Content, Converting Article Listing, Manually Related Content, Rewards Listing, Section Feature Scroller, Article Highlights, Article Listing, Topic Related Content, Event Listing, Media Listing, Prime Content.

Directory - the formerly Online Directory is now renamed simply Directory

Editions - added support for a second media item on each edition, so that one can be a downloadable version, e.g. PDF and the second an in-browser viewer, e.g. Flipping Pages.

Edition Imports & Exports - added Media 2 and Additional Search Data columns to the Edition Import

Events - we have reactivated the Event Profile, which now lets you set your preferences on what events are listed on each events channel, with the ability to define if you wish to display Upcoming and / or Past events or indeed All events, along with refined options on showing the month and year filters. Advanced events now support a Call to Action in the Base Bar. This is for when event signups / ticket sales are transacted through external sites (if the event is for sale then that supersedes the external link). Advanced events can now have the event banner height set to fixed, supporting shorter banners on events (more content above the fold).

Forums - We are extensively refactoring all the Forum codebase to create a cleaner, faster, and more secure generation of forum. Much of that is reflected in this release. Note that we have completely reworked how the Forum Security Preferences work, so you will need to review and update your settings with this release. We have also improved the overall forum formatting for all the new available filters and options. New Hide Closed filter option on forums.

Invoices - you can now include the Bank Details on Order Invoices when set on the Invoice Profile

Mailing Lists - we have added clarity and guidance on Hidden Mailing Lists. When a user unsubscribes from any mailing list they are shown the name of the mailing list they are unsubscribing from. This is now clearly signposted throughout. Note that it is essential that you make your mailing list names fit for public consumption.

Media - greatly improved Control-side Media Detail Display, now showing all the media item details along with the analytics on the media view screen.

Message Campaigns - we have improved the usability of the Estimated Reach panel, in particular the language used so that it is more clear why users are being filtered out of the target group, and how many remain at each step of the filtering.

Message Template Builder - this release sees a significant usability upgrade to the Message Template Builder (MTB) with many improvements throughout the interface and message generation.

My Account > Order History - added a new Order Created label to highlight subscription renewal orders which are created but not yet placed.

My Profile - editing a profile now assigns the Member Type Security Group in the same way as it works on the Registration.

Orders / Pro Forma Orders - it is now possible to set the default status on Orders and Pro Forma Orders (via the Store Profile)

Order Import - further improved order import validation and feedback, in particular for subscription orders both digital and physical.

Order Line Item Report - added Subscription Filters: Subs Start Date(s), Subs End Date(s) and Subscription Status. We also added and made consistent the columns on the report and export with additional columns: Subscription Plan, Subscription Code, Subscription Start Date, Subscription End Date, Subscription Status and Batch Reference. We have also added a Payment Reference filter and as a column on the listing and export.

Overlays - the overlay Design Style is now baked into the Page Skin so that it is always present.

PDF Watermarking - it is now possible to watermark each PDF Media Library file which is downloaded. This is a fairly effective measure for discouraging PDF sharing as each one is tagged with the individual downloader’s own details. It is possible ultimately for advanced users to remove the watermarks but it requires effort and does reduce casual file sharing. The setting for the watermark is on the Media Library Profile.

Social - Sponsors are moved into Social

Structure - moved the Section Import to Structure

Subscriptions - it is now possible to add a filtered view of subscribers to any Contact List directly from the Subscriptions listing.

Two Factor Authentication (2FA) - When enabled, all users who have 2FA enabled are automatically redirected from the Control Login to the 2FA login, closing a potential security weakness.

User Security - we have added Member Type Security Group on the User Security screen, highlighting which security clearances have been applied via the member type. We have also added a Member Type Security History showcasing how these have previously been assigned.

Zones - Topic Lists are now a required setting on Zones to ensure that users’ interests and conversion event triggers are accurately identified on multi-zone setups. Zones now have the Bot Access Profile option as well for setting custom bot whitelisting and blocking on each Zone.
